No one builds alone – why the right Co-Founder might be your greatest asset, says Ayeesha Bala-Wunti.

We love the myth of the lone genius—the founder who defies all odds, builds from scratch, and wins. But in the real world of startups, that narrative is more fiction than fact. Behind most great ventures is not just vision, but partnership. In this piece, Ayeesha Bala-Wunti unpacks the emotional and practical weight of going it alone, and why the startup journey is far more sustainable—and successful—when shared. From cautionary tales like Nia’s to inspiring real-world duos like the Paystack founders, she reminds us that collaboration isn’t weakness; it’s a strategic superpower.

The startup journey isn’t meant to be a solo mission.

We hear a lot about the “lone founder”—the person with the vision, who builds everything alone, against all odds.

But let’s be real: the path to success is long, and it’s hard to go alone.

Take Nia, for example.
She had an idea that kept her awake at night. She was driven, passionate, and determined to make it happen alone.

She launched solo, working long nights on pitch decks, emails, and code, but after a while, it started to feel like more than she could handle.

One night, her app crashed the night before a big demo. She was exhausted and frustrated, sitting there with no one to share the burden.

And that’s when she realized: while it’s possible to build solo, it’s so much easier when you have a partner by your side.

Look at Paystack.
Shola Akinlade and Ezra Olubi co-founded the company with different skills but the same mission: to fix the online payments problem in Africa.

Their combined strengths helped Paystack scale, reach over 60,000 businesses, and ultimately get acquired by Stripe for over $200 M.

What if they’d tried to do it alone?
It’s hard to say, but it would’ve been a different story.

The truth is, co-founding brings balance.
It’s not about sharing the spotlight, it’s about shared responsibility, growth, and multiplying strengths. Having someone to challenge you, support you, and get you through the tough days makes a difference.

So, if you’re building something big, ask yourself:
Are you building with the right people?
Because even though the journey is tough, it’s a lot easier when you’re not walking it alone.

Tag someone you’d build with, or someone who has been a great co-founder.

The right partnership can change everything.
